Preconciliar Commission holds consultation on 15th All-American Council

SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications/] — On Monday April 7, 2008, the Preconciliar Commission held a consultation at the OCA Chancery in Oyster Bay Cove, NY. Guests invited to take part in the consultation included Archpriest Michael Dahulich, Dean of St. Tikhon’s Seminary, Archpriest Leonid Kishkovsky, Director of External Affairs and Interchurch Relations, Protodeacon Eric Wheeler, former OCA Treasurer, Deacon John Zarras, Metropolitan Council member, Dr. Paul Meyendorff, St. Vladimir’s Seminary faculty, and Mr. Mark Stokoe, editor of

Beginning with a review of a draft agenda for the 15th All-American Council, consultation participants addressed many issues related to the Council and to the wider situation of the Church at this time.

Those present agreed that the healing of hearts broken by the recent crises within the OCA is a most important priority for the Church. They also agreed that better communication and mutual accountability between the Holy Synod of Bishops and the membership of the Church is essential. Participants recognized that it was not realistic to assume that the healing of these wounds could be achieved by the 15th AAC alone. However, this council must be instrumental in the broader healing process.

Consultation participants proposed and discussed various AAC agenda items, and initiatives leading up to the Council. These would facilitate greater trust and closer synergy between the various leadership levels of the Church, clergy and laity.

This consultation is the first in a series of meetings being planned throughout the Church to discuss the AAC and its agenda.

Chaired by His Grace, Bishop Nikon of Boston, members of the Preconciliar Commission include: OCA Chancellor and Acting Secretary, Archpriest Alexander Garklavs; OCA Treasurer, Priest Michael Tassos; Director of Ministries and Communications, Archpriest Andrew Jarmus; Archpriest John Jillions; Resolution Committee Chair, Archpriest John Erickson; David Drillock; Michelle Jannakos; Eugenia Skuby, and recording secretary, Lisa Morris.

The consultation was facilitated by Mr. Brian Strom of the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution, Ottawa, Canada.

The 15th All-American Council of the Orthodox Church in America will be held November 10 to 13, 2008, in Pittsburgh, PA.

One response to “Preconciliar Commission holds consultation on 15th All-American Council

This is my first visit to the site. Upon review of press releases and comments, I experienced a bit of confusion, but eventually figured it out. I realize that each press release is unique, but the ones I reviewed all had the pre-conciliar commission/ town hall meeting as the theme. Just a suggestion – perhaps a blog thread could be established for a common theme rather than for individual press releases. This reply will be posted under this press release, and is the only one to date; but it is not the only one response to the theme of pre-conciliar commission/town hall meeting.

I have a suggestion (chancery staff forgive me, I know you all are working very hard and I do appreciate your labor), I sure could use a more regular stream of good news from around the OCA. I know missions are being established and the work of the Church continues even in the midst of the storm. We will get through the difficulties confronting us one way or another; but I sure could use some encouragement by hearing about how our fledgling communities are doing. For me, the primary reason we need to get our “collective” house in order, is so we can continue the work of mission/ evangelism. You can be sure that once we turn the corner of our present crisis I will be raising my voice in praise to God; proof that He has not abandoned us. But it is mission that will sustain through the difficulties we face as a Church in this post-modern society and culture in which we live. A Church reenergized by the Holy Spirit to fulfill its commission – this is the pressing need of our time. So, in short, I need more news about our missions. The photo submission for Pascha throughout the OCA is very good. Wow! All of our communities worshiping God in Spirit and in Truth – Christ is risen and death is no more! This is our only hope.
